I am interested in the presence of things. The little stone picked up and held in the palm. The perfect moment of a small cloud just so in the sky. There are moments when I feel a great sense of interconnection, and an awareness of presence. The sculptor Isamu Noguchi spoke about these kinds of things, that “the visible world, in human terms, is more than scientific truths. It enters our consciousness as emotion as well as knowledge.” That somehow, through sculpture, these inner presences could be translated into form.

Shells, seeds, pods, stones—these are often beginnings, appealing not only because of their shapes and textures, but for their metaphorical stories. In my working, I overlap this imagery with references to the body and the landscape, reconnecting the small and the large, the inner and the outer.
